1. Place limits on TV, computer games, and other sedentary pursuits
2. Encourage physical activities - 1+ hours/day
3. Make physical activity a family affair – take hikes, ride bikes together, go to the park…

5. Encourage the habit of eating at meal times and limiting snacking
6. Avoid eating in front of the TV – it conditions people to eat when they watch TV
7. Eat most meals at home. Restaurants serve too much for adults let alone children
8. Pack lunches -- with planning they can be much healthier than what they might buy at school
9. Provide wholesome meals and snacks that your child enjoys while introducing new foods

A GUIDE FOR LIVING IN 2011
Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow ON trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured IN plants..
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy.
5. Make time to pray.
6. Play more games
7. Read more books than you did in 2010 .
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9. Sleep at least 7 hours.
10.Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile.
Personality:
11. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12. Don't have negative thoughts on things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13. Don't over do. Keep your limits.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip.
16. Dream more while you are awake.
17. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

The Luck of the Draw
Some people do all the right things and still develop serious health problems. Others flaunt their bad habits and are able to live long lives, dying peacefully in their sleep at the age of 95. For example, high blood pressure (hypertension, HTN) is a common chronic disease in the United States. With HTN a person's heart has to work much harder, all the time, to pump the blood needed by the rest of the body. HTN is associated with heart attacks and stroke, and hypertensive heart disease is a leading cause of death. 1
HTN is often described as a lifestyle disease. 2,3 Those who are overweight and/or obese (this characterizes two-thirds of American adults) are at increased risk for HTN, as are persons with diabetes. People who don't exercise regularly are more likely to develop high blood pressure, as are those who smoke cigarettes. In fact, overweight/obesity, lack of exercise, and tobacco use are the top three causes of HTN.
Obviously, achieving an average weight, exercising regularly, and stopping smoking (or never starting) are three main lifestyle actions related to decreasing one's risk of developing HTN. But some people who are slim, have exercised all their lives, and do not smoke may still develop high blood pressure. In such a case, HTN is termed "essential hypertension". The person has a very healthy lifestyle, there are no risk factors for HTN, and still they become hypertensive. That is the luck of the draw, otherwise known as a genetic predisposition to this disease.
In a contrasting example, a few people may smoke two packs of cigarettes a day since age 15, drink a quart of gin every few days, and never get really sick. They don't develop lung cancer or liver cancer and have no problems with HTN or heart disease, and live lives that fly in the face of all received wisdom in the field of public health. They continue to thrive well into their 80s and beyond and love to tell their well-meaning friends and relatives, "I've never been sick a day in my life" while lighting up another cigarette. Such persons are described by epidemiologists as outliers, those whose health parameters represent an outlying 2.5% or less of the standard values. Their luck of the draw lies in possessing an indestructible constitution.
Of course the exceptions only prove the rule. Their existence does not suggest that rules for good health should not be observed. Regular vigorous exercise and a healthful diet containing plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables are important for all of us, young and old. Chiropractic care is an important component of the lifestyle mix. Chiropractic care helps people, young and old, achieve the best health possible. Sleep Deprivation Affects Memory, Mood, Weight Gain, and Appetite
The quality, depth and amount of sleep influences our mental, emotional and physical health. Sleep deprivation has been linked to the following:
• Shortened life span
• Inflammation
• Strained Relationships
• Heart disease
• Obesity
• Chronic irritability
• Memory loss
• Depression
Sleep is just as important to good health as a good diet, hydration, and exercise. Studies have shown a connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain. Essentially these studies show that people who do not get enough sleep are at risk for becoming overweight or even obese. This may seem illogical; that increasing our most sedentary activity (sleep) would help to prevent weight gain. How can sleeping more help to lose weight? The answer rests in the hormonal and metabolic changes that occur with sleep deprivation.
The stress of sleep deprivation causes our bodies to produce a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol inhibits muscle building and increases the production of insulin. Insulin in turn accelerates fat storage. In other words sleep restriction can contribute to a reduction in muscle size and can increase fat accumulation. Chronic sleep restriction alters the blood sugar metabolism and can contribute to diabetes later in life. Another potential source of weight gain is related to the molecule leptin. Leptin is secreted from fat cells signaling satiety, “We have had enough to eat.” It regulates body weight through appetite suppression and is also linked to having adequate sleep .With lack of sleep this signal is inhibited, so that people crave more food than they need. This in turn will lead to overeating and additional weight gain.
Aside from these factors there are other aspects of weight gain. When you are tired, you are not in the mood to exercise. When you are tired your willpower may be compromised and lead to unhealthy eating choices. You may drink more caffeine to stay awake resulting in increased cortisol and insulin production. Caffeine may interfere with normal sleep patterns resulting in a cycle of sleep deprivation and caffeine consumption. A vicious cycle is established, resulting in a downward spiral.

Employee Lifestyles Impact Employee Health
Approximately 40% of all deaths in the United States are premature (at least 900,000 deaths annually) and are due to unhealthy lifestyle choices such as tobacco use, poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, misuse of alcohol and drugs, and accidents. Other contributors to early death include genetic predisposition (30%), social circumstances (15%), poor access to quality medical care (10%), and environmental exposures (5%).
Unhealthy lifestyle is the primary contributor to the six leading causes of death in the U.S. – heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory diseases, accidents, and diabetes – which collectively account for over 70% of all deaths. , , ,
People with healthier lifestyles live an average of 6 to 9 years longer, postpone disability by 9 years and compress disability into fewer years at the end of life.
The prevalence of obesity among U.S. adults rose to 30% in 1999-2000, a 33% increase from a decade earlier, and the prevalence of diabetes also rose by 33% during approximately the same period (1990 to 1998).
About two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese,8 55% do not get enough physical activity, 26% are completely inactive,10 and only 25% eat recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables If diet/physical activity patterns continue worsening at their current rate, these behaviors will soon surpass tobacco use as contributors to mortality.3
Among young people, the prevalence of overweight has more than quadrupled in the past 20 years to 16%, daily participation in high school physical education classes has dropped from 42% in 1991 to 28% in 2003, more than 60% eat too much saturated fat, and almost 80% do not eat recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables.
Lifestyle diseases disproportionately affect women, racial and ethnic minorities, the poor and seniors:
• The prevalence of diabetes among African Americans is about 70% higher than among white Americans, and the prevalence among Hispanics is nearly double that for white Americans.
• Women comprise more than half of the people who die each year of cardiovascular disease.
• Chronic conditions significantly limit daily activity for 35% of persons over 65 years of age.
Financial Impact of Lifestyle
It is estimated that lifestyle-related chronic diseases account for 70% of the nation’s medical care costs, which translates to over 11% of the entire U.S. gross domestic product.
Two comprehensive scientific reviews identified 83 peer-reviewed studies reporting that people with unhealthy habits have higher medical costs. ,
Research conservatively estimates that high health risks (high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc) account for at least 25% of total medical costs.
Recent research indicates a direct relationship between modifiable lifestyle risks and lower worker productivity, , and relevant data suggest that the costs to employers in lost productivity due to poor employee health may be substantially more than the direct medical and disability costs. ,
Unhealthy lifestyles often lead to chronic disease, many of which cannot be cured and require years or decades of expensive treatments. Below are estimated annual costs of selected unhealthy lifestyles and chronic diseases including obesity, , smoking, hypertension, diabetes, stress, and inactivity.
Worksite Health Promotion Improves Health and Yields Major Savings
Comprehensive scientific reviews identified 378 peer-reviewed studies showing that worksite health promotion programs improve health knowledge, health behaviors, and underlying health conditions.
Research has demonstrated that lifestyle modification may often be more effective and cost-effective than medical intervention in reducing morbidity and mortality.
Several scientific reviews indicate that worksite health promotion programs reduce medical costs and absenteeism and produce a positive return on investment.20, , , The most definitive review of financial impact reported that:
• 18 studies indicated that these programs reduce medical costs, and 14 studies indicated that they reduce absenteeism costs.20
• 13 studies that calculated benefit/cost ratios all showed the savings from these programs are much greater than their cost, with medical cost savings averaging $3.48 and the absenteeism savings averaging $5.82 per dollar invested in the programs.20
Medical costs are expected to exceed 16 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in 2005 and to grow at 7.2 percent annually through 2015, when medical expenditures will account for 20 percent of GDP: ,
• Per capita medical costs in the U.S. are the highest in the world and more than double the median for OECD countries (see chart below), yet the United States ranks 26th in terms of healthy life expectancy.
• Medicaid is the second largest item in most state budgets, and its portion of the total budgets is increasing each year.
• Rising medical costs for U.S. employers continue to outpace general inflation, averaging 12 percent per year for the past 10 years. This trend is causing a tremendous financial hardship on U.S. employers.

Conventional medicine, however, has not recognized that it fails to provide a foundation for wellness. Screening for early manifestations of disease, while necessary, is not sufficient. It is our hope that by integrating wellness knowledge, services and products along with certain complementary healthcare approaches into the traditional medical model, all concerned (individuals and organizations) will experience greater savings, improved health and get health and healthcare under control. And by making these services readily available to the public will help remove the health disparities among different segments of the population.
Without this approach, wellness experts predict by 2030 government expenditures on healthcare are projected to reach 50% of government revenues. Much of this could be lessened by employers and employees adopting wellness principles into their daily lives. Companies are facing the same crisis: Starbucks for example reportedly spends more on employee healthcare than coffee. Proven fact: when business leaders and their employees understand the principles of good health and act according to those it leads to increased wellness and prevention of injury and disease. This will impact productivity, decrease health care costs, and `reduce injury rates. Teaching Wellness has been shown to have the unique ability to reduce medical claims even in the first year of implementation.
